Department Of Public Works Pretoria,Pretoria is a city in the northern part of Gauteng, South Africa. It is one of the country’s three capital cities, serving as the seat of the executive branch of government (Cape Town is the legislative capital and Bloemfontein the judicial capital).



Pretoria has a reputation for being an academic city with three universities and the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) located in its eastern suburbs, the city also hosts the South African Bureau of Standards making the city a hub for research.

Pretoria is the central part of the Tshwane Metropolitan Municipality which was formed by the amalgamation of several former local authorities including Centurion and Soshanguve. There have been proposals to change the name of Pretoria itself to Tshwane, and the proposed name change has caused some controversy.



Vision

The National Department of Public Works is committed to facilitating delivery by other departments by providing accommodation and property management services and meeting the objectives of poverty alleviation and transformation. In 2003 the Department formulated the following new vision, mission and value statements to demonstrate the Department’s and its employees’ serious commitment to Government’s vision of a better life for all the country’s citizens:

Mission



The Department of Public Works (DPW) aims to promote the government’s objectives of economic development, good governance and rising living standards and prosperity by providing and managing the accommodation, infrastructure needs of national departments, by leading the national Expanded Public Works Programme and transformation of the construction and property industries. In pursuance of this objective the Department will endeavour to:

  • Efficiently manage the asset life cycle of immovable assets under the Department’s custodianship;
  • Provide expert advice to all three spheres of Government and parastatals on immovable assets;
  • Contribute to the national goals of job creation and poverty alleviation through programme management, leading and directing of public works programmes nationally, of which the Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP) forms an integral part; and
  • Provides strategic leadership to the Construction and Property Industries.
