About the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery

The Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at Brigham and Women’s Hospital is committed to providing state-of-the-art treatment and exceptional, compassionate care to patients that suffer with orthopaedic and musculoskeletal disorders. The Department of Orthopaedic Surgery has had a long tradition of innovation and clinical excellence in all aspects of musculoskeletal medicine ever since it became an academic department in 1980 with the merging of the Peter Bent Brigham Hospital, Robert Breck Brigham Hospital, and the Boston Hospital for Women. The Department has also had a long collaborative relationship with the Division of Rheumatology and was one of the first programs in the country to provide care for patients with musculoskeletal disorders.

Nearly 40 orthopaedic surgeons specializing in Joint Reconstruction, Sports Medicine, Shoulder Surgery, Hand Surgery, Spine Surgery, Orthopaedic Trauma Surgery, Foot and Ankle Surgery, Podiatry, Cartilage Repair, and Orthopaedic Sarcoma and Cancer Surgery provide the full spectrum of services to deliver the highest quality of care for our patients and their families. The Department has outpatient facilities for consultations at the new Hale Building for Transformative Medicine located near Brigham and Women’s Hospital (BWH), Brigham and Women’s Faulkner Hospital, Brigham and Women’s/Mass General Health Care Center at Foxborough, Brigham and Women’s Health Center in Chestnut Hill, and Braintree Rehabilitation Hospital with plans for further geographic expansion for improved patient convenience.

The Department also provides non-operative general musculoskeletal care for common orthopaedic conditions that are best treated without surgery. Working in collaboration with the Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and Primary Care Departments, our Department has outstanding non-surgical physicians that specialize in non-operative care of various musculoskeletal disorders. Common entities such as osteoarthritis, low back pain, sciatica, carpel tunnel syndrome, rotator cuff shoulder pain, ligamentous and meniscus injuries of the knee, bunions, tennis elbow, hip impingement syndromes, muscle and tendon injuries, as well as bony fractures are all examples of common orthopaedic diagnoses that, in many instances, can be successfully treated conservatively but, in some instances, may also require the need for surgery to get patients back to the quality of life that they desire.

Our vision for the Department is to serve the local, national and international community with the highest quality orthopaedic care by the most experienced and distinguished caliber of academic orthopaedic surgeons. Our team of surgeons also work closely with other health care professionals and staff in a collaborative effort to provide optimal delivery of clinical care resulting in the best possible clinical outcomes for our patients. Our commitment to our patients and their families is to simply deliver “quality” in all areas of orthopaedic care through the strength of the Brigham and Women’s Hospital’s partnerships with members of Partners HealthCare System, Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, Harvard University, and our local community.
