What makes the Department of Education at York special?

We are widely recognised in the UK and beyond as a leading department in the field of education with a national and international reputation for the excellence of our degree programmes, research and curriculum developments. We are ranked in the top ten Education departments in the country in the Complete University Guide 2016 and 2017.



Our research

In the Government’s 2014 Research Assessment Framework we were ranked in the top ten of Education departments in the country for proportion of 4* world leading research activity. Our research focuses on language education, science education, psychology in education and education and social justice. We also have links the National Science Learning Centre, which is located on the University campus.

Our teaching

At York you will receive a high quality education from a world renowned university located in one of the most beautiful and historical cities in England. Our degree programmes were rated ‘excellent’ in the most recent Teaching Quality Assessment exercise.



In the latest Postgraduate Taught Experience Survey students rated the Department highly for Teaching and Learning, with 95% of respondents agreeing that ‘staff are good at explaining things’ and 94% agreeing that ‘staff are enthusiastic about what they are teaching’.

We offer a wide range of undergraduate and postgraduate degree programmes in an open and supportive environment that encourages frequent interaction between staff and students, and individualised personal supervision.

There is a strong international dimension to our work and students come to the department from across the globe, including China, Japan, Mexico, the USA, the Middle East and Sub-Saharan Africa.
