Department Of Arts And Culture Kwazulu Natal, The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Arts and Culture promotes, supports, develops and protects the arts, culture and heritage of the province. The province’s heritage sites, museums and monuments also fall under this ministry.

The Department believes that arts and culture play a crucial role in nation-building as well as in developing a new national identity reflective of our democracy. The Department’s initiatives such as the Social Cohesion Programme ensure that people are proud of their diverse culture and heritage.

The KZN MEC for this portfolio is Mrs. Bongiwe Sithole-Moloi and the political head on a national front, Minister of Arts and Culture is Nathi Mthethwa.
KwaZulu-Natal Arts and Culture, MEC Mrs. Bongiwe Sithole-Moloi, the second of seven children, was born in Qhudeni north of the province. She moved to Imbali in Pietermaritzburg at the age of two, starting her primary education at Mthethomusha Primary and matriculating at Siphesihle High School in Ntshangwe outside Durban.

Between 1990 and 1992 she worked at the ANC’s secretariat office dealing with finances. She embarked on law studies at the University of Cape Town in 1993, taking modules that she says equipped her with skills to contribute towards building a new and democratic South Africa. These included political and social science, public administration and local government administration studies. In 1996 she worked at the ANC’s Chief Whip office in Parliament before joining the Communications directorate in 1998.

MEC Sithole-Moloi became Mayor of Umgungundlovu District in the year 2000 where she received unqualified audit reports for eight years. She then headed a newly established division that dealt with traditional leaders’ disputes under Co-Operative Governance and Traditional Affairs. MEC Sithole-Moloi was thereafter appointed Chairperson of the Royal Household Portfolio Committee.

She was appointed as MEC for Arts, Culture, Sports, and Recreation in the province on the 7th of June 2016. MEC Sithole-Moloi is also a member of the Provincial Executive Committee and Chairperson of the Social Transformation Subcommittee.
