Our role

One of the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development’s roles is to grow and protect Western Australia’s agriculture and food sector. We work professionally and with integrity to help deliver meaningful results to industry, government and the community.
We work with industries and businesses throughout the sector, helping them identify and capitalise on opportunities for growth as well as to manage and overcome obstacles.
We support all aspects of food and fibre production at each stage of the supply and value chain. This is achieved by building market knowledge and conducting innovative research and development.
We also develop and enforce regulations that ensure the production of high-quality, safe and healthy food for our customers in Australia and overseas.
Importantly, we are strong advocates for the WA agrifood sector and its vital contribution to the economy, jobs and regional growth.

Protecting our resources and industries

Our department has a pivotal role in helping to look after the productive capacity of our precious soil and water resources and world-class biosecurity system, and minimise the impact of climate variability.
Our long-term commitment to biosecurity has helped maintain WA’s relative freedom from pests and diseases and earned its reputation as a world-class producer of clean, safe and premium products.

Working with you

Our highly skilled staff throughout WA deliver a diverse range of services to agribusinesses right along supply and value chains.
We partner with industry, private business and research institutions through the world to drive profitability and productivity and generate innovation, knowledge and excellence in the sector.
